AbstractAntecedentes y justificación: On 2021, the Brazilian Navy shared the coordinates of four Sargassum spots on the Northern Brazilian continental margin supposed to be oil slicks. Planteamiento del problema y objetivos: Monitoring the distribution of Sargassum in the ocean by remote sensing is of great importance to avoid false alarm verification costs1. Materiales y Métodos: Images from the Wide Field Imager (WFI) sensor onboard the CBERS-4A and Amazonia-1 satellites on a temporal window of ±3 days from the alerts were acquired and processed to Rayleigh corrected reflectance2,3, allowing the observation of the Sargassum spots. To distinguish the Sargassum on the sea surface, we combined the visible, near- and short-wave infrared bands to generate false-color images, in addition to the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). Resultados y Discusión: At least one satellite flew over the alert regions and identified Sargassum spots. On June 21st and 24th, Sargassum was identified by both satellites floating ~57 km northwestwards between image acquisitions. The NDVI histogram was analyzed to identify the values corresponding to clear water, cloud and Sargassum endmembers. The NDVI classification showed good performance with a small percentage of false Sargassum mainly due to pixels composed of mixtures of endmembers, solved using a band ratio criterion4. Conclusiones: The combination of CBERS-4A and Amazonia-1 WFI sensors provided a unique monitoring time frequency and spatial resolution (55 and 64m) to deliver fast and robust information about Sargassum spots on the Northern Brazilian continental margin. The false-color composite image had a good contrast between the Sargassum and the clear water while the NDVI proved to be effective in classifying oceanic images.
